SimPAD®
SimPAD® is worn by residents of aged care facilities and other sufferers of incontinence.
SimPAD® system remotely monitors their continence events; thereby assisting carers in the assessment and management of continence, and helping them deliver higher quality care to its sufferers.
How SimPAD® works

The innovation offered by the SimPAD® derives from the software. It incorporates an algorithm for automating the process of analysing signals from the sensor; interpreting the data to give an accurate assessment of the continence event; and then alerting the carer.
SimPAD® Components
- A disposable sensing pad, being a standard incontinence pad specially fitted with a sensor
- A detachable and re-useable transmitter
- A wireless network for managing signals
- Software on a central computer for monitoring, analysing and recording continence events and for controlling associated communications to care staff.
Key Benefits
- Fewer nursing attendances required
- Fewer unnecessary intrusions
- Fewer instances of pad leakage
- Fewer instances of soaked pads and wet bed linen
- Reduced risk to skin integrity
Other Benefits
- Improved quality of life for sufferers
- More accurate bladder charts resulting in better assessment and more appropriate toileting and continence care planning
- Reduced overheads associated with assessment, resulting in the ability to reassess more frequently
- Reduced odours
The Future of SimPAD®
This product has recently been evaluated as part of DoHA sponsored clinical trial. Preliminary results are overwhelmingly positive.
The SimPAD® is currently registered with the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) as a Class 1 medical device.
The commercial product, due to be released in early 2009, will be directed at continence assessment in residential aged care. The system will include a support and training program for care staff; and allow integration with products supplied by third parties, such as continence pads, care management software and wireless networks.
The SimPAD® is also being adapted for applications in the home and in sub-acute care, for the infants, the disabled as well as the elderly. This will include products to be used as a means of evaluating treatments, and for day-to-day management of the incontinence.
